Billy Batson was a teenaged orphan who sold newspapers on the streets until he followed a mysterious figure onto a magical underground train. The train brought him to a strange, cavernous lair where he met the wizard Shazam. The wizard granted Billy the amazing powers of legendary figures to become a champion of justice. With his new abilities, he tracked down a gang carrying out the orders of the mad scientist, Dr. Sivana. Over the years, Sivana would become a persistent enemy, determined to destroy Captain Marvel. By covering the exploits of Captain Marvel, Billy soon earned a job as a radio broadcast news correspondent.

Equipment and Abilities:
When Billy Batson said the word, "Shazam!" he changed into Captain Marvel, a larger adult form that possessed the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. Captain Marvel was at least strong enough to throw a car a significant distance and to stop a moving train. He was tough enough to withstand massive heat and barely feel the impact of a bullet. He was also able to leap hundreds of feet in the air and even fly like Mercury himself. In his civilian form, he was a competent radio broadcaster.

Shazam was an ancient mystic, who had once served as the earth's protector, using powers derived from ancient gods and heroes. He lived for centuries in a cave, hidden deep beneathe the earth. When he was no longer strong enough to protect the earth itself, he bestowed his powers onto Billy Batson. At that moment, he died, crushed on his throne by a giant granite block. However, his spirit lived on to guide Billy and to grant powers to Billy's twin sister, Mary and his friend, Freddy Freeman.
