Joe's father, Tom Higgins, was a chemist working on a formula called SHIELD (Sacrum, Heart, Innervation, Eyes, Lungs, and Derma), which was intended to protect soldiers from harm. Unfortunately, he was killed in an explosion, set off by Nazi spies. Before dying, Tom managed to tell Joe the secrets of the formula, and Joe went on to complete it. After being attacked and badly beaten by his father's killer, Joe took the shield formula and sealed himself into a special white suit. He was then exposed to "flouroscopic rays" for 12 hours. The process gave Joe tremendous power and invulnerability. He soon became an agent for the FBI, helping to track down spies and other criminals.


Equipment and Abilities:  
The Shield is virtually invulnerable. Guns, swords and ordinary flames have no effect on him. He can take the full brunt of a car smashing into him. He has survived a number of large explosions and even claims "I eat hand grenades for breakfast." He has even survived a 10,000 foot dive into water. However, he does need to breathe and is susceptible to poison gas. He can be injured by a suffient explosion, and can be temporarily stunned or knocked unconscious by high voltage electrical attacks.

The Shield also possesses superhuman strength, sufficient to lift and throw a tank. He can also make superhuman leaps into the air, at least several hundred feet high, a half mile wide and fast enough to keep pace with a car or plane.

The Shield's armored suit also has a number of gadgets attached to it. He has electronic ears, which allow him to listen in on conversations through walls. He also has micro suction cups in his gloves which allow him to scale walls.

In addition to his powers and his armor, the Shield is a skilled chemist and engineer. He has also been trained as a master spy, and he has high level security clearance. He is an experienced pilot, and he is good with his fists and with firearms.


DUSTY, The Boy Detective
After his father was killed in a plane crash caused by foreign sabouteurs, Dusty helped the Shield to track down those responsible. Proving himself tough corageous and resourceful, Joe Higgins adopted Rusty and made him his crime fighting partner.

Betty Warren
Betty Warren is the daughter of an outspoken US senator who was assassinated for his leadership in matters of US security. Like her father, Betty is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs and has taken over her father's chair in the senate.

JuJu Watson
Juju is an FBI agent assigned to assisst Higgins. He has beome a close personal friend of Joe and Betty Warren. Juju is brave, tough and proficient in the use of firearms.

Mamie Mazda
Mamie is Juju's girlfriend. She is domineering and often scolds him, but she loves him beyond words and would do anything for him.
